I am completely torn with the finishing process for the table.
After being used for weeks, the dining table is starting to look pretty scruffy. Although on one hand ‘patina’ is nice, there’s a big different between patina and ‘what’s that greasy stain next to my elbow?’. Also, unfinished wood doesn’t wipe clean very easily so it never feels like I’ve wiped off every crumb. On the other hand, I love the very pale colour of the wood, and I’m hesitant to do something that ends up not feeling right, and therefore ruining the look of the whole table.
I tested out some Briwax in ‘antique brown’ on one of the stools we made (on the right), and while I really like the texture of the finish, the brown just looks really yellow to me. And in an east-facing room, yellow just isn’t good. I still much prefer the raw wood (on the left).
Another option is a different colour of wax. I quite like the teak and mahogany finishes that Briwax make, so maybe that’s the best option? I know I need to bite the bullet and just do this last final step, but because it’s such a huge table, the finish will really affect the whole room.
But I am going to set myself a deadline to have it finished by the start of May. I WILL have my birthday dinner on a 100% completed table!
